Making Maple Syrup in Rochester, MA

photo 1 photo 2Rochester Webelos Cub Scouts were lucky to be able to participate in maple syrup making in Rochester, MA last month.  Our neighbor, Wendy Keeler invited us over to watch the process.  She taps red maples rather than sugar maples since that is what is available in our area.  The maple syrup has a great taste, a little more vanilla flavor, than traditional syrup from sugar maples.  She had 11 tapped trees on her property and the cold nights and relatively warm days provided overflowing jugs of sap.  The boys watched as she boiled the sap from the trees outside over a arch system fire.  The boiling releases a lot of steam so boiling outside is preferable.  The boys were surprised to learn that it takes 40 gallons of sap to make 1 gallon of syrup.   It also takes 24 hours to boil the thin sap into a thick syrup.  We got a taste of the finished product and it was delicious.

We also brought a 5 gallon bucket of sap home, thanks to Wendy, and boiled it down to one mason jar worth of syrup.  It took 24 hours but it was worth every minute.  The syrup was delicious.  We are definitely rationing it to make it last as long as possible. It’s a lot of work but the finished product is so sweet.

I really enjoy working with the Cub Scouts to learn new experiences.  I also enjoy working with my clients in real estate to help them buy or sell their property.  Please call me with your real estate needs.  I would be glad to help!

Rochester Pack 30 Webelos Cub Scouts Work on their Forester Badge

Bold Moves Real EstateMy son Eli, and his fellow Webelos  of Rochester Pack 30 have been working on their Forester Badge.  They have listened to a very interesting talk by our neighbor, Wendy Keeler on many different types of trees.  She brought along huge pine cones and other treasures that she has found and saved in her many walks through all kinds of forests.  We helped the boys build bird houses to put out in the spring for the birds to enjoy.  On Monday, we also went for a walk through the woods near our house to identify different trees.  It is a little more difficult at this time of year with the leaves gone. but it helped the boys look at other parts of the tree  to help identify them.  We found quite a few different kinds as well as this huge tree that the boys could not wrap their arms around.  It was a little warmer than usual so it made for a very nice walk through the woods.  Hopefully it gave them a greater appreciation for the trees around us and the longevity they provide.

The boys are also working on their homemade cars for the Pinewood Derby which will take place at the end of the month.  It was interesting to hear the names they picked out for their cars as well as their ideas to make them unique as well as fast.  Stay tuned for more information to come as the race gets closer.

I love spending time with my son, Eli, and his fellow Cub Scouts , as well as selling real estate.  Please give me a call with your real estate questions and I will do my best to help you out.      macgregorcarolyn@gmail.com   508-742-8314

Christmas time on the Family Farm!

photo-5photo-3Christmas time is always a special time on the Family Farm.  Rochester Pack 30 Cub Scouts had a great Christmas party complete with a Santa Relay and a Surprise visit from the Big Man himself.  All the scouts got a chance to sit with Santa and have a little chat including my son, Eli.  They also received their PineWood Derby kits to start working on their cars  for the January Pinewood Derby.

We also were able to walk through the woods and pick a Christmas tree this year.  This is usually our holiday tradition but we were afraid that a lot of the trees were trimmed off this year and we wouldn’t find any, but we found a nice, full one.  We missed our two older children who weren’t able to come but Eli cut it down with help from his Dad and it’s a really pretty tree. It’s nice to still be able to carry on the tradition with Eli.

My daughter, Meg just got home from school.  It’s so nice to have the family all together at the holidays.  The house just seems to come alive.

I am also busy with real estate.  Give me a call with all your real estate needs and enjoy the holidays with your family.

Downtime on the Family Farm!

photophoto-1There really is no downtime on the Family Farm, but it does slow down this time of year.  The garden is finished and my son has been harrowing it up with a mini harrow he pulls behind his Gravely tractor. The potatoes have been stored in the barn and we still have a bunch of sweet peppers that did really well this year.  The corn has all been chopped and piled up for the winter thanks to my family.  I was very relieved I didn’t need to join in this year,(not my favorite chore), but my younger son did the brunt of the work with my husband.  The cows are holed up in the lower pasture for the winter and all the hay and sileage is stored for their winter feed.  There is the new chore of bringing wood in for the wood stove, but it really does not compare to all the summer chores.

It’s a time to catch up on all the farm maintenance.  With the days getting shorter and the darkness coming earlier, I do miss the long summer nights but I also don’t mind a time when we are in the house earlier and have more time for family.  There is more time to read a good book, maybe play a family game or catch up on the inside maintenance on the house which usually means cleaning and purging.  It’s a favorite time of year for me, although I love each and every season in turn.  There is joy in every time of year and time  to count our blessings which I am always grateful.

I am also grateful to help people with changes in their lives such as buying or selling their home.  Please call me and I will take the time to help you achieve your goals.

Family Farms and The Bold Moves Real Estate Hayride!

zombie eli and howardBold Moves Real Estate had it’s annual Client Appreciation Hayride down on the Family Farm.  There was a tractor pulled hayride through the woods with lots of scary scenes.  These included a graveyard  with scary inhabitants,  a crazy chainsaw man, a mad doctor inclined to cut off various limbs with lots of blood and body parts,  a coven of witches with a cozy fire, a frightening zombie apocalypse, a grim reaper, and lots of bats and ghosts and various other things that zipped and jumped out at the wagon. It really was a great night with delicious treats and warm drinks  to make young and old happy.  We really love putting it on for our wonderful clients and family and friends and it really is fun being the “scary things” in the woods. We really want to thank everyone who spent the night in the woods and also who helped set up and make the tasty treats which were available.  It also was a good idea to have the opportunity to collect donations and food items for Mercy Meals.  It really was a spooktacular night on the family farm.

Bold Moves Real Estate is committed to serving our clients and doing what they need to move on with their lives,  whether it be buying or selling a home, or helping them stage their house to sell.  We really are committed to our client’s needs.

Rochester Webelos Cub Scouts at Fire Station

photo 4 photo 1 photo 3 photo 2The Rochester Pack 30 Fourth and Fifth Grade Webelos had a great time at the Fire Station learning about first aid for their Readyman badge. EMT Wendy Ashworth and Mark Lawrence demonstrated the basics of first aid, including splinting and wound care, as well as how to handle serious situations such as shock and seizures.
The EMT’s explained what to do in these situations and then the boys were able to practice on each other.  They learned quite a bit and were able to show their skills after. We are very appreciative to Wendy and Mark for helping the boys and showing them skills they will need to receive their Readyman badge and also skills they need in day to day life.  It was great to watch the boys be very attentive and serious and come away with new knowledge and experience. I also learned a few things I didn’t know.  All in all, it was a great time.

I really enjoy being a part of Cub Scouts and feel it helps me in my real estate career meeting new people and helping them change their situation.  Please call me with your real estate needs and I will give you the attention you deserve.

Family Farm is in full Summer Swing

Carolyn MacGregor, Realtor at Bold Moves Real EstateThe family farm is in full summer swing at this time of year.  We have already started cutting hay with this batch of dry weather and are waiting for a break in the  showers to continue.  It’s always a hot, dry day that works best for doing hay but that is precisely the type of day that you’d rather be in AC than on a hot, dusty field. We are lucky that the whole family helps.  Teamwork is always needed to get the hay cut, teddered, raked, baled and loaded into the barn. We’ve had some luck with customers who pick the hay right up off the field at a lower price and we are always looking for new customers to do that. It makes our job a little easier and saves them money.

My daughter, Meg, has also been picking strawberries and making jam.  There is nothing as sweet as the taste of a fresh strawberry right off the vine. I can just sit in the strawberry patch and eat strawberries all day.

Everything is planted and coming up pretty well.  Our potatoes look good and we are always checking them for Colorado potato beetles.  We find that picking them off by hand works better than spraying and is healthier for everyone.  Striped cucumber beetles are also a bug we have to look out for.  They will eat the whole plant down to the root.   We are in the process of using mulch hay around the potato plants and all the hills in the garden to keep the weeds down. It’s always a battle against the weeds.

We have already been eating the lettuce and greens in our garden and I can’t wait for the cucumbers, my personal favorite. It will be another couple of weeks for that. We also love summer squash and have found some great new recipes for that.  We’re hoping to have a good watermelon crop.  We love them but they are very hard to grow.  We usually have only a few that grow large enough to eat. Hopefully that will change this year.

It is a lot of work, but there is nothing like having a meal made with ingredients that came fresh out of the garden.  I put a lot of effort into making my garden flourish and I will give you the same hard work and energy in helping you meet your real estate needs.

Baseball Season and the Family Farm

photo(11)Baseball always comes at a hard time on the farm, just as we are starting to plant, but we really enjoy watching Eli play.

This year baseball changed in Rochester from Rochester Youth Baseball to the tri-town Old Rochester Little League.  We were a little apprehensive with a new league and Eli was unsure of playing with kids from Marion and Mattapoisett that he didn’t know.  When we first learned he was on the White Sox, we looked at the roster and he was a little sad that he only knew two kids on the team and one was a lot older.  He was one of the younger kids on the team.

The game schedule did work out pretty well with my work schedule, so that was a plus.  Once Eli started practicing, he really enjoyed this year and we met a great group of parents and kids who were very positive and caring.  The coaches were great, encouraging a team effort and the kids really pulled together helping each other and having a great time. It was a great group of kids and we met some really nice people. I must say it was a nice, fun year and I am glad Eli met some great kids he will be in school with in junior high.  All the parents were positive and fun and I’m glad we decided to try out the tri-town league.  The kids did an awesome job and had a great record.  They were even undefeated for the first six games. One of Eli’s favorite chores was always dragging the fields after games and practice.  I guess it’s the farmer in him. We look forward to next year.

I always have time for your real estate needs and will work to help you meet your real estate goals.
